In 1989, students protested at the Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China. The protests lasted almost three weeks; however, soldiers stopped them. Soldiers and tanks shot at protesters, and several thousand people died.

Every year, people in Beijing remember this horrible event. People light candles at the square and pray for the people who died. However, Hong Kong police canceled this year´s event. The police said that the reason was the coronavirus.

However, some people believe that the reason is different. Last week, the Chinese government approved a new law. This law gives the government more power to stop activities that can remove the Chinese government in Hong Kong. Some people think that the police wanted to stop possible protests against the law.

Hong Kong was a British colony which Britain gave back to China in 1997. However, the city is autonomous and its autonomy from China should last until 2047. However, China sometimes signals that it will not wait so long.

Many people in Hong Kong are afraid that China is trying to get more power from Hong Kong. There are protests in Hong Kong at the moment over an extradition law. This law would let China take criminals accused of some crimes in Hong Kong.

The head of Hong Kong’s government says that it is a good law because criminals can be safe in Hong Kong without the law, but people are afraid that China is trying to get more power from this.

Difficult words: tank (a heavy military vehicle), pray (to speak to God), approve (to officially agree with something), autonomous (free), extradition (giving an accused person to a foreign country), accused (a person officially in trouble because they maybe did something illegal).
