Bamberg (dpo) - That just went well again! A team of veterinarians at the Bamberg Veterinary Clinic has managed to save the life of a mayfly with a 23-hour emergency operation. The intervention was necessary because the avian influenza, which had recently hatched, was found to have a severe heart defect. Without the surgery, the animal would probably only have to live one more day.

"After I examined the little one, I knew that we needed to operate immediately and that even then the chances are still poor," said chief physician Dr. med. med. vet. Waldemar Kohler exhausted after the 23-hour operation marathon but satisfied.

There were several complications; Once, after about twelve hours, the adult patient at that time was actually clinically dead. Only by a multi-minute chest compressions, artificial respiration and the use of a tiny defibrillator could the Mayfly be brought back again.

The heroic use of the surgical team was worth it: it will take another hour before the anesthesia has subsided completely. Then the aged insect can finally enjoy life to the fullest.
